    Notes from the Winemaker

This varietal has become practically tantamount to Bel Lago. Our founder, Charlie Edson first came across Auxerrois, which is closely related to Chardonnay, on a trip to the Alsace region in France. Knowing it would be uniquely suited to thrive on the Leelanau Peninsula, we planted our first vines in 1987 and became the first in Michigan and one of the first in the country to do so. Auxerrois (pronounced Awk – Sair – Wah) is a consistent producer and ripens early, yet it retains its fruit‐forward profile. This wine is clean and crisp with notes of papaya, mango, guava and apricot balanced against a subtle minerality.

    Composition

    100 % Auxerrois

    Production Notes

This wine was fermented in large stainless‐steel tanks at a low temperature to retain freshness, creating a fruit-forward wine.

A powerful wine, robust aromatics and rich structure are complemented by balanced sweetness. This wine can stand up to spicy foods as well as sweet desserts.

Harvested in November, the fruit was very ripe. We fermented it slow and cold, and stopped the fermentation to retain plenty of sweetness from the grapes.

CREATING COMMUNITY

On Tuesday, August 13th, Bel Lago had the honor of helping host the 3rd Annual Big Change Equals Big Change Fundraiser for 5Loaves2Fish at North Farm – and what a night it was!

The event brought together our community in the spirit of support and generosity. With the beautiful backdrop of our vineyard, guests enjoyed live music, a variety of delicious food options from our classic hot dog cart featuring local brats and veggie dogs, fresh salads, and sweet desserts. Our vineyard tours were a highlight of the evening, showcasing the natural beauty of North Farm and providing a glimpse into the heart of Bel Lago.

But the real magic of the evening was the sense of connection and shared purpose as we all came together to support the incredible work of 5Loaves2Fish. Founded by Michelle and Bill White, this organization is a vital lifeline for many in our community facing hunger and food insecurity. Their story began with a simple but powerful call to action from Melissa, who saw a need during the Covid-19 shutdown and reached out to Michelle with a heartfelt plea: “We need to feed our people.” That simple request sparked a movement that has grown into something extraordinary, helping countless individuals in our region.

Throughout the evening, the dedication of 5Loaves2Fish and their mission to serve the vulnerable was evident. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers, supporters, and the guidance of Jane Lippert at Central United Methodist Church, 5Loaves2Fish continues to make a meaningful impact. It was a privilege to be part of this event and contribute to such an important cause.

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us, donated, and supported 5Loaves2Fish. Your generosity and community spirit truly made a difference. We look forward to many more events like this at North Farm, where we can celebrate the power of community and continue making a positive impact together.

Make sure to stay tuned for future events.
